Like the pub in Passport to Pimlico, Up The Junction (this being the 1968 Peter Collinson adaptation of Nell Dunn’s book which had previously been adapted for television by Ken Loach and presented as part of The Wednesday Play series) presents the establishment as a communal place to socialise and relax. It is part saviour, part purveyor of refreshment, part backdrop to character development, and, eventually, another stage for one hell of a pub brawl.

We’re perhaps overly familiar with this favoured British drinking establishment as a place to start a fight – The Firm, Trainspotting, Legend, the toilet scene in The World’s End – and Shaun of the Dead is ultimately no different. …here’s 10 great pub scenes in 10 great films… Shaun Of The Dead (2004) Pub: The Winchester American film has witnessed similar use of the bar room to complement story but the pub offers cinema a piece of quintessential Britishness that is unique in its presentation of place, time, character and plot.

It’s a location where we’ve watched characters develop, plots progress, and Britt Ekland strut her sexuality in The Wicker Man. In the pub we’ve seen Michael Caine’s Jack Carter famously order a “pint of bitter” in a thin glass in Get Carter, David Kessler and Jack Goodman getting a cold welcome in An American Werewolf in London’s “Slaughtered Lamb”, and Begbie starting a mass glass-smashing fight in Trainspotting. In film, the “public house” has been used as both a defining cultural characteristic and a place where characters can chat over pints of lager, befriend others, find romance, dance, brawl and, in the case of Shaun of the Dead, seek refuge from a zombie apocalypse.
