The "Print Spooler" can be found in Control Panel. One thing you might check first is to make sure the Print Spooler in "SERVICES" is started, and Bidirectional Support is Enabled. The check box is near the bottom.ġ1) Set any Printer Preferences you use, if any, and it's ready to go. To do this, go to Devices and Printers and select "Printer Properties" and then the "PORTS" tab.
You need to reboot to clear things up before the next step.ġ0) Enable Bidirectional Support and Reboot. Bidirectional Support must be Enabled, and the setting won't stick if the printer is hooked up. Hook the printer back up when prompted by the installer.ĩ) Unhook the printer again and reboot. I used both XP SP3 and Vista Compatibility Mode on different attempts, and both worked. If after you uninstall your drivers there is still anything there other than Microsoft drivers, delete them.Ĩ) Reinstall software\drivers.
You can also check the drivers in Control Panel. Only one printer this time.Ħ) At the prompt from the Lexmark uninstaller, Reboot.ħ) After rebooting, STOP the Print Spooler again. I started over, and unchecked the "Shared" box on the first message. I then ended up with two printers in Printer Preferences. In the process of doing this, I got two popup Security messages from Windows Firewall concerning "Allowing" Printer Communication. Otherwise, all I get with my machine is the Lexmark Fax, and as a result, you can't "Remove" the printer.Ģ) Once the printer is visible in Devices and Printers, physically unhook it.ģ) "REMOVE" the Lexmark Printer and Lexmark Fax (if you have one) in Devices and Printers.ĥ) Uninstall the software\drivers. This needs to be done just this one time to get it to show up in Devices and Printers. This may also be related to the Print Spooler.ġ) Turn on and hook up your printer.
Note: Bidirectional Support is needed, and for some reason the upgrade process turns it off. I had read about a recommendation to turn off the Print Spooler before uninstalling the software quite some time ago, and I had tried that, but it didn't work. The problem has to do with the Print Spooler interfering with the uninstall\reinstall process. If you don't have software\drivers specifically for Win 8 or 8.1, be sure to use Compatibility Mode for the OS it worked on previously. Here is what I had to do to get it to work. I had a problem with a Lexmark in which normal uninstalling\reinstalling didn't solve the problem.
